The Best Games You've Never Played
By Jesse D. Watson (North Dakota)

Retro Game Challenge is retro gaming bliss.

The best retro game collection released in decades is made up entirely of fake games, many outright clones of titles you may have grown up with. Scandal? Hardly. The brilliance, and at times abject parody, not to mention the quality of the designs, art, music, even the dialog (dialog in a retro collection? yes, and it's great!), add up to what would have been my game of 2008 had it released mere months ago.

I find it hard to imagine anyone spurning such a joyful bundle of gaming goodness. Even those with no memories of the NES era will find plenty to enjoy. Each of the games feels complete and fulfilling on its own, and the addition of a framework of challenges and unlockables functions as a carrot to draw the gamer deeper. Where I found myself, in other collections, hopping from game to game aimlessly, here, I'm gently prodded into learning the intricacies of each selection, and it's immensely satisfying. The freeplay mode, with its more subtle incentives, became a surprising favorite, but beyond that, the shell of sitting down, virtually, with a childhood pal, searching through fake game magazines (with great shout-outs to real life editors you might remember), even getting yacked at by your friend's mom ("Are you two still playing? Control yourselves!") adds up to one of the most charming experiences I've had in gaming.

As for the games themselves, they're the best Famicom titles that never existed. The crown of the collection, at least for me, is the epic (10-15 hour!) RPG, Guadia Quest, but there is more than something for everyone, the focus being on action. In truth, I've never had so much fun with shooters before; I actually like Cosmic Gate more than, say, Galaga. To paraphrase Bono, "Even better than the real thing." And that's truly just the tip of the proverbial iceberg.

The designs borrow happily from the past (each game's influences can be dissected like the best of loving tributes) but never get bogged down in the tedium or problems of our actual retro libraries. In other words, they're coated with enough modern game philosophy (but not too much!) that they don't end up making you remember what you hated about the halcyon 8-bit days (hey, nostalgia covers over a multitude of sins).

I could write a lot more, but in the interests of aiming for less than 300 words (pff), I'll cut it off here. Please, I'm telling you, just buy it! I want the sequel!

The Legend of Zelda: Spirit Tracks by Nintendo

The Legend of Zelda: Spirit Tracks is an action/adventure game for the Nintendo DS and DSi that sets Link, the iconic hero of the Legend of Zelda series, on a daring new adventure. The game provides players with a new story, more puzzles, a new mode of transportation--by train--and a new companion in combat, the Phantom. Together these offer up new possibilities for problem-solving, adventure and fun to both longtime and new fans of the franchise alike.

Propulsion and Problem-solving
One of the most prominent features of The Legend of Zelda: Spirit Tracks is the ability to travel by rail throughout the game. When Link conducts the train, players enjoy a satisfying combination of action and real-time puzzle solving as they determine which track to take and how to best manipulate their speed. When on the train, Link must plot the best route to the end of the line around ever-moving obstacles. While en route, Link might need to fire an onboard cannon at enemies who attack the train or sound the whistle to scare animals off the tracks.

The Phantom
In The Legend of Zelda: Spirit Tracks, Link has a valuable new companion in combat and puzzle-solving, the Phantom. A faceless knight in a hulking suit of armor with immunities to dangerous elements like fire and magma, the Phantom responds to Link's directional commands. Players can simply tap the Phantom with their stylus to take command of him, then draw a line on the touch screen to direct him where to go. He will engage enemies automatically when he comes within range of them. The stout Phantom can also be used as a platform to carry Link above and over dangers, or even run interference to block Link from harm or help finish off an enemy.

New In-game Items
Spirit Tracks also introduces a variety of new items and weapons to The Legend of Zelda franchise. One of the most notable is the Whirlwind, which Link uses to move items and overturn enemies. Players activate this by blowing into the microphone of the Nintendo DS or Nintendo DSi system. Other new items include a whip, useful both in combat and in platforming, as well as his train's cannon, which can shoot bombs into the distance.

Map Functionality
As with The Legend of Zelda: Phantom Hourglass, in Spirit Tracks players can look forward to helpful interactive map functionality. The game map appears on the system's top screen, as opposed to the action on the bottom, and players can draw notes on the in-game maps using the stylus on the touch screen. This allows players to quickly mark spots in the game world of note for later exploration, or to note them as already explored.

Zelda is back-and better
By tmujir955

Phantom Hourglass, for me, was a disappointment. I found it to be EXTREMELY repetitive because you had to go back to the same dungeon after every mission and solve the same puzzles over and over again.

Luckily, Spirit Tracks removes this problem, because every time you go back to the "Spirit Tower", you have to solve a different level(or floor) of the tower.

There is no button control scheme, but the stylus controls work fine.

Graphics are REALLY nice. Your jaw will drop when you see some of the bosses.

Train rides are a bit monotonous, especially when you have to travel all over the place.

Puzzles are entertaining as always, and Spirit Tacks is "different" because you have a Phantom helper at some points in the game.

Overall, an enjoyable way to kill, say, 20-30 hours. Also, there are new weapons in this game; certainly an improvement. I am absolutely sure this game will sell like hotcakes for the holiday season.

Note: If your planning on this as a gift, your target audience should be 10+. Some puzzles are fairly challenging, make sure to take note of that.

Sonic Classic Collection by Sega

Sonic The Hedgehog, one of the world’s most recognized and successful video-game characters returns to the Nintendo DS in this new collection of his original adventures. Sonic Classic Collection is the complete compilation of the original SEGA Genesis Sonic titles, consisting of the following genre-defining games: • Sonic The Hedgehog • Sonic The Hedgehog 2 • Sonic The Hedghog 3 • Sonic & Knuckles It also features two extra lock-on modes from the originals whereby Knuckles becomes a playable character in both Sonic 2 and 3 to complete the full experience. For the first time the best of classic Sonic comes to the Nintendo DS for a new generation of gamers!

A nearly perfect port of Sonic's classic adventures
By K. Frisch (Ohio)

Though Sonic's original Genesis adventures have been packaged together numerous times in the past, this is the first time that these classic platformers have all been in the same place on a handheld system. With Sonic the Hedgehog 4 launching later this year, no doubt many Sonic fans will be wanting to revisit the original games, and Sonic Classic Collection provides a fantastic way to do so on the go.

Included in the collection are Sonic the Hedgehog, Sonic the Hedgehog 2, Sonic the Hedgehog 3, and Sonic & Knuckles. In addition, the two lock-on versions of Sonic 2 and 3 are included, so one can play as Knuckles in those games as well, which is a welcome inclusion. Sadly, the multiplayer player modes have been stripped out of all the games. Admittedly, multiplayer was never a major focus in the original Sonic games, but not even being able to have someone jump in as Tails in Sonic 2 is a bit disappointing.

Another frequently asked question is whether or not the original level select codes work. The answer, sadly, is no. It would seem that, while the codes can in fact still be activated, there is no way to access the level select menus themselves after doing so. This might be a deal breaker for certain fans, but it's an omission that many likely won't care about.

As for the classic games themselves, things are fairly solid. It must be said that the ports are not perfect. Framerate issues are present. It has to be said because they are there. However, they are very slight and after playing for a minute or two, they become nearly unnoticeable. Sonic 1 seems to chug the most for some reason. Overall, the games run fast and smooth, which is a vast improvement over the disaster that was Sonic the Hedgehog Genesis.

[UPDATE] Having recently had an opportunity to play this game on a DS lite and a 3DS, I have observed that the framerate issues vary depending on the system. This review was originally written based on the experience of playing the game on a DSi, where framerate issues are present but not prominent. On a DS lite, however, the framerate dips were more frequent and significantly more noticeable. By comparison, when played on a 3DS, the game runs nearly flawlessly, with only slight lag appearing, mostly in places where it occurred on the original Genesis. So if you're thinking about picking this one up off the bargain rack or whatever, take into account which console you'll be playing it on, as it will effect your playing experience.

In order to make the games fit on the screen, SEGA had to mess with the graphics. They use two solutions in game. First, the view has been cropped in a little, allowing it to scroll side to side slightly to frame a good view. Second, similar to the Classic NES series on the GBA, every few lines of pixels have been removed, causing all the graphics to appear slightly shorter. It's subtle, and a few distortions are visible, but when running at full speed, the compromises are nearly unnoticeable.

The sounds and music made the jump to DS just fine. Music sounds nearly spot on to the original Genesis titles, with only slight subtle differences appearing in a couple of songs. Sound effects are quiet faithful as well, but like the music, tiny oddities sometimes occur. Occasionally a sound effect will loop in an odd way that doesn't quite match the original. Overall, the games still sound like themselves, and only the pickiest of fans will notice the changes.

Beyond the actual games, Sonic Classic Collection is a bit sparse on extra features. It features a small photo gallery where artwork of Sonic characters can be viewed. This is somewhat interesting, but really is only worth looking at once. Beyond that, it's just the classic games and that's all. All the games have now been fitted with individual save functions, which is very handy. Oddly, all the menu buttons are mapped to the touch screen alone, so pausing and saving must done there, and the start button does nothing. This is not a big issue, but it takes a little getting used to, since the start button is nearly universally used for pausing.

Overall, Sonic's original adventures are lengthy and diverse, and having them all on one cart means getting some serious bang for your buck. Are they absolutely perfect representations? No. However, the problems are so slight that many likely won't even notice or care. If you're a classic Sonic fan looking for a portable fix, or if you've never had a chance to play these games and see why Sonic is so famous today, Sonic Classic Collection could not be more highly recommended.

This is a very good game. I got it because I am an animal lover and when I saw that on the title it has "over 100 animals" I was curious. This game does have a lot of animals that surprise you when you get them. The graphics are pretty awesome and it is a game that will keep you busy for hours on end. Great for kids and adults a like.

Incredible 3D Effect
By J. Nguyen (Grand Prairie, TX)

I use to hate 3D. It gave me a headache after just 15min of watching a video. I hate 3D glasses and 3D movies in general. Well, Nintendo changes all that.

The folks at Nintendo sure know how to make 3D and I'm very surprise that Nintendo is the first to mass market 3D without glasses successfully. But I'm here to talk about Ridge Racer 3D so here it goes.

First off, I own Ridge Racer 1 & 2 for the PSP and it's among the most fun game I had with a racing game and I'm not even a racing game fan. What I really like about this game(3DS version) is that the 3D visual blew me away and win me over. I can imagine more complex game down the pipe using this awesome technology Nintendo have created. The depth of field is astounding. I can clearly see what's ahead of me when the 2D version is lack of. I often bump into rail in 2D Ridge Racer because I can not see what's ahead of me but the 3D enable me to see further into the field and get a sense of realism and depth. Why I also like this game so much is that Amazon gave me $25 credit toward a 3DS game when I pre-order a 3DS system from them. So I paid less than $20 for this game although I would happy to pay full price for it.

The bad part of this game is that the texture is not as good as the PSP version. However, when playing in 3D, it's forgivable because I'm having a blast enjoying the 3D effect to notice any lack of texturing details. The game lighting is great but there's always room for improvement. Some tracks are from Ridge Racer for the PSP, but since it has 3D effect, it felt fresh whatsoever.

The final result is an amazing game. You have to play it in 3D mode to be able to really enjoy this game. I will be looking forward to the next 3DS Ridge Racer.

You know what you're getting
By thewiirocks

If you've played the Asphalt games for iOS, this is basically the same thing. In fact, it appears to be Asphalt 5.

If you've played it for DSiWare, then this is that, but much better.

Here's the thing: The 3D effect supercharges this game into something awesome. You know how you tend to pick up power-ups by trying to drive into the general vicinity of the items and hoping for the best? No more! With the depth perception offered by the 3DS, you can nail those power-ups each and every time.

Similarly, I had a lot of trouble with take-downs in Asphalt 5. Judging the relative position of other cars can be tricky, leading to a number of near misses. With the 3DS, it's a snap! In fact, you can zip by passenger cars within inches and come off unscathed due to the depth perception of the 3DS.

A lot of reviews have panned this game. Many of the same reviewers panned Just Dance. Don't listen to them. If you enjoy Asphalt even in the slightest, you will LOVE this game!
